Measured BRDFs of any Material
Material reflectivity database for lidar simulation

Reflectivity is Essential for Lidar Simulation
Lidar sensors cannot be simulated without knowing the reflectivity of different materials. The reflectivity depends on the wavelength of the lidar, the viewing angle and of course the material that is measured. We measure the wavelength-dependent reflection characteristic at several angles for all kinds of materials. Check out the example materials below and request a quote for the database.

Our Reflectivity Measurement Device
How the materials are measured

Patented Measurement Device
Our patented measurement device captures bidirectional reflectance values of materials in our lab or at various test sites. It consists of two rotating arms with separate laser and detector supporting multiple wavelengths from 905 nm to 1550 nm.
The output is a full wavelength-dependent BRDF, that can be used in many simulation tools. Find more information here.
Different Reflection Characteristics
Different materials have different reflection characteristics. They range from diffuse over specular to retroreflective. But it is not always either, or. Characteristics change depending on the angle. Even a diffuse material can have strong specular tendencies in shallow angles. Here are two examples of a diffuse and specular material.

What our customers say

Credible sensor simulation is essential for reliable perception development in agricultural automation. Across multiple projects, Persival has been a strong partner for CLAAS in establishing measurement-driven LiDAR simulation. In our joint work with Persival and dSPACE, the precise real-world material reflectivity measurements were key to establish a realistic simulation setup. This enabled a credible pre-validation of perception algorithms and helped to significantly reduce the sim-to-real gap.
