Lidar and Radar Performance Measurements

Perception Sensor Base Performance Assessment

Do you trust the data-sheet of your sensor? Do you need more information than given in the data-sheet? Do you want to compare the performance of different sensors for sensor selection? Or do you want to validate a sensor models against real world sensor data with high accuracy ground truth data?

Lidar performance measurements according to DIN SAE SPEC 91471

Standardized Performance Measurements

We conduct real-world measurements based on DIN SAE Spec 91471. With these measurements, you can quantify the actual performance of your lidar sensor. We use an adaptation of the standard for radar measurements.

Reference Targets for Range Assessment

Place different kinds of targets at different distances under varying incident angles.

Our precision target holder is compatible with a variety of 1 m × 1 m calibration targets, including 10 %, 50 %, and 80 % Lambertian targets, as well as retro-reflector targets. Custom targets made from any material can also be accommodated. The target can be positioned at any azimuth or elevation angle relative to the sensor.

Angular and Radial Separability Tests

Ensure your lidar or radar sensors can reliably distinguish between multiple road users in complex environments. We measure the minimum angular and radial separation required to accurately resolve individual targets within the point cloud. By utilizing high-precision layouts with variable reflectivity targets, we validate your sensor's ability to handle multiple detections per beam.

Custom Targets

We go beyond standard calibration targets by testing your sensors against the specific surfaces they encounter in the field. Our setup supports custom targets, for example with original automotive paint to evaluate performance with strong specular materials. By testing with these diverse, real-world materials, we provide the high-fidelity data you need to ensure your sensor technology performs reliably across all surface types.

Automatic Sensor Station

The high-precision sensor station is fully automated, allowing the sensor to be positioned at any predefined azimuth and elevation angle with an accuracy of 0.01°. Additional reference systems measure the distance to the target with millimeter-level precision and also ensure perfect alignment between the sensor and the target.

Precision Ground Truth Generation

Our test bench automatically generates ground truth data containing the sensor and target positions and orientations. This way, the measurements can directly be re-simulated with sensor models. The re-simulation can then be analyzed in Persival Simspector and compared to the measurements with Persival Avelon.

What our customers say

DB_InfraGo_logo_red_black_1000px_rgb.png

Persival’s sensor performance measurements were of exceptional value to the development of our LiDAR sensor simulation at Digitale Schiene Deutschland (DB InfraGO AG). This simulation formed the foundation for developing our perception system for fully automated trains within our project AutomatedTrain which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy.

To reliably validate the simulation model, we required a large volume of highly precise real-world sensor data. Persival stood out as the ideal partner thanks to their deep expertise in sensor simulation and measurement. Within just a few weeks, Persival delivered over 50,000 high-quality reference measurements - meeting all our stringent requirements and enabling accurate and reliable digital re-simulation.
