In this video, Clemens, our CTO, demonstrates how to simulate radial velocity measurements using the Sensor Model Development Library (SMDL). This tutorial focuses on FMCW lidar and radar sensors, which measure the relative radial velocity of objects using the Doppler effect down to the level of individual points in a point cloud.

Tutorial 13: FMCW lidar simulation with ray tracing

Topics Covered

  • FMCW Lidar Simulation: Learn how to simulate sensors that provide radial velocity measurements for each detection.

  • Doppler Effect in Simulation: Understand how the SMDL calculates velocity using motion data from ASAM OSI ground truth.

  • Micro-Doppler Effects: See how rotating wheels and moving limbs produce varying velocity readings within a single object.

  • Human Motion Simulation: Explore how bone orientation and movement are used to simulate realistic velocity data for pedestrians.

Tools & Standards for Co-Simulation

Next Steps: In the next tutorial, Clemens will show how to measure reflectance distributions to be used as material properties in the simulation.
